    Pirates shut out Hershey

    Saturday, November 07, 2009
    From staff reports

PORTLAND, Maine - With goalie Jhonas Enroth on recall to the Buffalo Sabres, the Portland Pirates turned to AHL rookie J.P. Lamoureux Friday night at Cumberland County Civic Center.

Lamoureux, getting his first AHL shutout in just his fifth AHL appearance, had 28 saves in a 5-0 victory over the Hershey Bears.

The Bears, whose winning streak ended at four games, suffered their first shutout and most decisive defeat of the season.

Portland took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Kyle Wanvig (8:46) and Jeff Cowan (power play at 13:04). Derek Whitmore (2:58), Travis Turnbull (9:37) and Mark Mancari (power play at 12:55) added third-period goals.

Bears goalie Jason Bacashihua (22 saves) suffered his first loss of the season (4-1-0). Lamoureux improved to 2-1-0.

It was the first regular-season shutout of Hershey since March 29, 2009, when Wilkes-Barre/Scranton won 1-0. It was Hershey's worst shutout loss since a 6-0 defeat by Hamilton on Oct. 29, 2008.

    NOTEBOOK

Bears centerman Keith Aucoin, who turned 31 Friday, exited with an apparent ankle injury in the second period but returned for the third.

It was Hershey's most decisive regular-season defeat since a 7-2 loss to Albany on Jan. 14, 2009.

Former Bear Cody McCormick assisted on Mancari's goal. Former Bear Brad Larsen (foot) didn't play.

Zach Miskovic and Brandon Sugden were healthy scratches for Hershey.

Portland played without Nathan Gerbe, sidelined by an unspecified injury.

The teams split the two-game season series 1-1-0-0. Philip Gogulla, who had two assists Friday, had three points in two games against Hershey.
