  • Harrisburg police investigate "suspicious" death

    by JOE ELIAS, The Patriot-News
    Monday October 13, 2008, 9:43 PM

Police investigate the death of a man Monday evening at an apartment in the 1800 block of Whitehall Street in Harrisburg.

The death of man found Monday evening in an empty apartment near Reservoir Park is being investigated by Harrisburg police. The unidentified man's death was called "suspicious" in initial dispatches sending police to the apartment in a house in the 1800 block of Whitehall Street, near Regina Street.

Other residents of the building and neighbors said the victim was one of several people doing construction work in the apartment during the last few days. One woman who lives in the building and asked not to be identified said the men were working on the walls of the apartment.

Police can be seen searching the apartment in the 1800 block of Whitehall Street, Harrisburg, where the body of a man was found Monday evening.

City detectives and forensic personnel spent several hours in the house and could be seen searching the room where the man was found with flash lights. They carried out several bags of evidence. Police said only that the death was under investigation and provided no further details last night.

Missing Fredericksburg boater's kin cling to hope

by BARBARA MILLER, Of The Patriot-News
    Monday October 13, 2008, 9:18 PM

Bruce Weaver rode his bicycle to work every day, keeping him physically fit. So family members were surprised the Fredericksburg man was the one of six from the family to go missing after a "rogue" wave crashed into their fishing boat off the coast of Delaware.

It's also hard for Raymond Kreiser of Cleona to imagine that the life vest-wearing Weaver was last seen after about six hours in the choppy sea being hit by another wave and that he might not return.

The search of 473 square miles of ocean off of Delaware has failed to find Weaver after the Thursday morning accident.

East Pennsboro students see the scar that cigarettes spawned

by DAVID WENNER, Of The Patriot-News
    Monday October 13, 2008, 8:37 PM

Ron Girsch, an anti-smoking activist, hugs East Pennsboro Area High School freshman Susan Indovina after hearing that she lost her father to cancer this year. Her teacher Nadine Biller is at right.

Ron Girsch, 67, began smoking when he was about 13. He smoked for 35 years until an X-ray showed a bottle-cap-sized spot on his lung.

His lung cancer triggered several things.

He quit smoking. Doctors cut a long, half-oval incision on the side of his chest and removed a lung.

And he began visiting local schools, hoping his experience -- and his scar -- would convince students to never to pick up a cigarette or any kind of tobacco. The Susquehanna Township resident has been at it more than 15 years.

PennDOT won't get frozen out of hiring plow drivers

by FRANK COZZOLI, of The Patriot-News
    Monday October 13, 2008, 8:24 PM

PennDOT crews load salt into a snow plow in Harrisburg on March, 16, 2007.

One thing Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation can't do without is heavy-equipment operators to treat the highways in what could be a snowy winter.

The freeze that has stopped most state agencies from hiring anyone has been waived for PennDOT which is hiring about 1,300 temporary plow operators and 300 more clerks to provide 'round-the-clock coverage.

"Obviously, winter operations and snow plowing truly come down to a matter of public safety," said department spokesman Steve Chizmar.

Gun rights advocates might attend Lebanon woman's hearing

by BARBARA MILLER, Of Our Lebanon County Bureau
    Monday October 13, 2008, 2:34 PM

Isabella Hain, 5, gives her mother, Meleanie Hain, a hug before heading onto the soccer field last month at Optimist Park in Lebanon. Before her gun permit was revoked, Meleanie Hain wore her weapon, a loaded Glock 26, in a holster to her 5-year-old daughter's soccer game.

Lebanon County officials are preparing for the possibility that gun rights activists will be showing up -- with their weapons -- for the Tuesday afternoon court hearing of a Lebanon woman who has drawn attention for wearing a handgun on her hip at her daughter's soccer game.

Meleanie Hain will have a hearing at 2:30 p.m. before Judge Robert Eby in Courtroom 1 on her appeal of Sheriff Michael DeLeo's revocation of her permit to carry a concealed weapon.
