Lies about war prompted switch
I remember little from my first visit to Gettysburg. It was around 1951, and at 7 the ride out and back would have made for a long day. But Gettysburg was important to my father, so we went. What I do remember was standing below the statue of a mounted soldier looking out over a broad field. I now know the statue was that of Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock, my great-grandfather's corps commander, and the field was where the dreams of the Confederacy died.
