After a day-long meeting Monday, several agencies involved in paying to run the various gauges agreed to provide funds to keep them operating temporarily, said Bob Hainly of the United States Geological Survey.

    by FRANK COZZOLI, The Patriot-News
    Friday September 26, 2008, 8:18 AM

Nagging rain greeted commuters today as they trudged off to work, and it promises to hang around through the weekend.

The storm system, which was centered in South Carolina this morning, is expected to track slowly northward to New England by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service at State College.

Funds needed to run river gauges, officials say

by FRANK COZZOLI AND JOHN BEAUGE, Of The Patriot-News
    Tuesday September 23, 2008, 12:01 AM

Spectators take a view on March 6 of the rising Susquehanna River near the rail bridge where the unofficial river measurement marks appear at Riverfront Park in Harrisburg.
Flood forecasting in the Susquehanna River Basin might take a major step backward on Oct. 1 if money isn't found to pay for 14 stream gauges and 14 rain gauges. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has notified the U.S. Geological Survey that the gauges it pays for, plus three water-quality monitors, will have to be shut down because of budget cuts.

A loss of funding would cause shutting down the satellite connection to the 14 stream gauges that provide forecasters with real-time information, USGS officials said. Some of the 14 rain gauges also are connected to the satellite.
